Round 284

Use the base converter below for conversion

http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/users/exner/ncsa/base/

I found that the following is match:
553 (base 13)
546 (base 23)
897 (base 17)
318 (base 19)

converts all 4 numbers into base 10 and sum them up then convert back to the base 32 and submit the answer.

This is where you can learn about base:

I'm confused by this part:
then convert back to the base 32 and submit the answer.

Thanks, LC Solver!

LC Solver said...

yeah, when you got the sum, you convert back the number from base 10 to base 32 and submit the answer because the answer is in base 32.

thanks!

I'm confused about converting back to base 10. I'm horrible at math.

Convert all numbers into base 10. Add them up. Then convert total into Base 32.

Am I doing this right?

LC Solver said...

seals: look like you doing quite right. itslovexbillion: the conversion has been done by the converter (link above) so you just need to convert 4 numbers from the given bases to base 10...

I think I got it now. Just a little question is there supposed to be a letter with 2 numbers in the answer?

LC Solver said...

no, it suppose to be a number (all digits are from 0-9)

Anonymous said...

is it ok if there is 3 numbers that are all under 9? Or doesnt it have to be just 1 number?

LC Solver said...

a number with 3 digits.

How did you managed to find which numbers match which base?
And there's this hint.. "It's just coincidence that all four numbers only use digits 9 and below." How does that apply?

The solution as runnable Perl code. It gives the same answer as TNT's. I strove for clarity, not conciseness.
